The genus Coffea comprises more than 100 species , but commercially speaking the best known are the Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora , better known as robust.
COFFEA CANEPHORA
It was discovered in the Belgian Congo (now Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1800. This plant grows at lower altitudes than the Coffea Arabica, with higher temperatures or less favorable and is more resistant to disease .
This makes the production of robusta coffee less costly and that is why it is considered a product with a high commercial potential.
The taste is bitter and woody with notes of burnt rubber, and is very high percentage of caffeine . It has a low acidity and full-bodied on the palate. The grain has a form rounded and with a groove right inside .
COFFEA ARABIC
It grows in elevated areas (between 900 and 2000 meters above sea level) and needs a constant temperature of 20 ° C . It is less durable than Coffea canephora, does not resist eg drought, continuous rain, frost or strong winds.
It is a very fine coffee and its production covers 3/4 of the world, even if it requires a more accurate processing at higher costs.
Sweet taste , rich aroma and fruity. It has a low caffeine content . The grain is elongated and oval-shaped , more flat compared to the robust grain and in its interior has an “S-shaped groove” .
